Fire:
In the event you locate a fire in the Residence Halls, immediately exit the building via the closest exit. If the Fire Alarm has not yet activated, PULL THE FIRE ALARM - located at each exit. When exiting a room with an active fire, close the door after you evacuate, whenever safely possible. Once outside call 911.
Building Fire Alarm Activation:
- If you are in a common area (stairwell, hallway, lounge, etc.) when the alarm goes off, proceed to the nearest fire/smoke free exit.
- If you are in a bedroom or inside a suite when the alarm goes off, please adhere to the following rules:

- Wake any sleeping occupants in that room.
- Feel bedroom door. If cool, open slowly and exit.
- Feel suite/quad door. If cool, open slowly and exit.
- Proceed quickly to the nearest fire/smoke free exit.
- If a bedroom, quad or suite door feels hot, or if fire/smoke exists, remain in the room, shut and stuff the door (towels, clothes, blankets, etc.). Open and stand by the window to summon for assistance.
Fire exits:
- South Halls and North Halls:
- 1st Floor – Exit via the fire exit to the front of the building or either side fire exit.
- 2nd & 3rd Floors - Exit via either stairwell down to the first floor and out the side fire exit.
- Bellamy Hall: Use the stairwell at either end of the building. The center stairwell should only be used when adverse conditions exist in the fire exit stairwells. NEVER USE THE ELEVATOR.
Local Bedroom/Suite Gathering Room Fire Alarm Activation:
- Each student bedroom in any building as well as Bellamy Hall Suite Gathering Rooms are equipped with a monitored fire detection device that activates in that area only. It does not activate the building Fire Alarm unless two devices or a common area device is activated.
