This fall, the Mohawk Valley Community College Cultural Series will host several make-and-take workshops at its campuses in Utica and Rome. Limited tickets are available at mvcc.edu/tickets.

The following workshops will be offered: 

  • Cheese and Charcuterie Board Design & Theory: 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, Dining and Community Hall, Plumley Complex, Rome. This workshop, led by Vincent Petronio, Director of Hospitality Programs at MVCC and Executive Chef at motus Utica, will teach the art of charcuterie, which in the French tradition is the art of preparing and assembling cured meat, cheeses, and garnishes. Admission is $15 general, $10 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.
  • A Novel Idea: Publish That Book: 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, Dining and Community Hall, Plumley Complex, Rome, or 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, Room 225, Wilcox Hall, Utica. In this workshop, Sam McManus, author and MVCC Assistant Professor of English, will introduce the tools and techniques you need to tell your story your way. Admission is $10 general, $5 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.
  • Crochet Granny Squares: 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, Room 225, Wilcox Hall, Utica. The classic crochet granny square has been trending in the fashion world, and this workshop, led by Lauren Venettozzi, owner of Love and Stitches, will demonstrate how to them to create blankets, sweaters, and bags. Participants will learn joining techniques and variations on the classic pattern (must be able to crochet a chain stitch and a double crochet stitch to participate). Admission is $10 general, $5 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.
  • Paint and Sip with Art & Vine: 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, Room 116, Alumni College Center, Utica. In this fun, step-by-step workshop, Instructor Connie Pratt, MFA, will direct students to paint “Adirondack Fall and Chairs” while enjoying non-alcoholic fall beverages. Admission is $20 general, $15 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.
  • Holiday Glass Ornaments: 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, Room 225, Wilcox Hall, Utica, or 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, Dining and Community Hall, Plumley Complex, Rome. In this hands-on workshop, Penny and Marie Veschusio, owners of Songbyrd Street Studios, will lead the process of creating a fused glass holiday ornament — a festive tree! With their guidance, participants will create ornaments from various types and colors of glass while learning how to cut the glass pieces and decorate their ornament. Penny and Marie will bring the ornaments back to their studio to be fired in the kiln, and the ornaments can be picked up the following week (Dec. 5-9) at the MVCC Box Office, which is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is $10 general, $5 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students. 
  • Wool Felting: Would You Like to Build a Snowman?: 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6; Room 225, Wilcox Hall, Utica; or 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7; Dining and Community Hall, Plumley Complex, Rome. Eric Freeman of Wool Felting Creations will demonstrate how to create a wool felted snowman using a variety of wool and a special wool felting needle. The completed snowman will be approximately 3” to 4” tall. Admission is $10 general, $5 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.
