Step into the vibrant world of salsa with “From African Folklore to Salsa: Sin Negro No Hay Guaguancó” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025, in Schafer Theater, Wilcox Hall, at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica. Tickets, which are $10, can be purchased online at mvcc.edu/tickets

This dynamic event, led by local community leader Hilda M. Jordan and international dance master Jair Chará, includes a brief talk on the origins of salsa as a tool for cultural identity and social change in 1960s New York, followed by an interactive dance lesson covering the basics, including turns, rhythm, and lead/follower roles. Discover how salsa became a celebration of community and self-expression among immigrants, bridging cultures and building lasting connections through music and movement. No experience is required.
