Platform-Tilted Headwinds

By 2040, higher education could be reshaped by powerful technology platforms that increasingly control how learning is delivered, credentials are earned, and talent is connected to employment. AI tutors, automated assessments, and skills-based hiring may increase convenience and efficiency, but they also risk concentrating influence outside colleges and communities. As funding pressures intensify and traditional institutions struggle to keep pace, access and opportunity could become increasingly dependent on who controls the platforms, data, and pathways. In this scenario, technological innovation advances faster than our ability to protect the public good. For community colleges, the challenge is not simply adopting new technologies, but preserving trust, human connection, local relevance, and equitable access in a system increasingly shaped by scale, automation, and market incentives.
