The Mohawk Valley Community College Concert Band will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, in Schafer Theater, Wilcox Hall, at MVCC’s Utica Campus, 1101 Sherman Drive. The concert is free and open to the public.
The performance will include “Thunder and Blazes March” by Julius Fučík; “Them Basses” by Getty Huffine, featuring the low brass and woodwinds; selections from Lerner and Loewe’s Broadway musical, “My Fair Lady;” standard ballads “September Song” (Kurt Weill) and “Deep Purple” (Peter DeRose); highlights from “Annie” (Charles Strouse); along with classics, novelties, and seasonal specialties.
The MVCC Concert Band has been a non-credit offering of MVCC’s Center for Community and Community Education since 1978. The ensemble encompasses volunteer musicians of all ages and abilities, amateur and professional, from all walks of life. Performances include several concerts each semester at area nursing homes, care facilities and retirement communities, as well as the occasional public concert and musical entertainment for MVCC’s Commencement Ceremony. Barbara J. Seaton, native Roman and RFA alumna, has been directing the band in 1995 when Robert Mickel retired. Under her direction, band members are challenged by many different composers, genres, and styles of music designed to create a meaningful and educational experience.
