The Mohawk Valley Community College Cultural Series will host a lecture on “The 49th Fighter Interceptor Squadron,” presented by Jim Coulthart, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Wilcox Hall room 225 at MVCC’s Utica Campus, 1101 Sherman Drive. Admission is free.
In his lecture, Coulthart, a local aviation historian and adjunct instructor at MVCC, will tell the extensive history of this storied AAF/USAF squadron from 1941 at Hamilton Field, Calif., to 1987 at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, N.Y. He will talk about accounts of the “Cornfield Bomber,” accidents (including that of Major General James Price), the current locations of former aircraft of the 49th Squadron, and unique visitors to the Squadron.
Coulthart will present the lecture again at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, in Festine Auditorium at MVCC’s Rome Campus, 1101 Floyd Ave.
