Mohawk Valley Community College’s Center for Corporate and Community Education is accepting applications for AmeriCorps, a free skills training and volunteer service program to train individuals aged 18 to 24 in Rome, N.Y. The six-month cohort will run Mondays through Fridays beginning March 4, with activities totaling 30 hours per week. Eligibility is limited to individuals 18 to 24 years old. Seating is limited and participants are approved on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program will enroll a new cohort of participants each year to improve the Rome community and surrounding areas through service projects, including renovation of low-income housing units, improvement of community gardens and parks, and other initiatives.

Members will receive entry-level construction training as well as soft skills training, resumé building, and job searching assistance. Members will receive a weekly stipend for their participation and an education award to be used toward the cost of college tuition after completion of the eight-month program.

Applications are available in Plumley Complex room 121E on MVCC’s Rome Campus, 1101 Floyd Ave. Walk-ins are welcome. For more information or to ask questions about the program, call 315-334-7761.

Funding for the project was provided by a grant from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services with support of the Corporation for National and Community Service.
