Increasing our Cultural Competency
Presenter(s): Todd Marshall
Cultural competency is paramount for faculty and staff in educational institutions
as it fosters an inclusive and supportive environment essential for student success.
By understanding and respecting diverse cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and practices,
educators can effectively engage with students from various ethnic, linguistic, and
socio-economic backgrounds. This competency enables faculty and staff to tailor their
teaching methods, communication styles, and support services to meet the needs of
all students, thereby promoting equity and reducing disparities in academic achievement.
Moreover, cultural competency encourages collaboration, empathy, and mutual respect
among faculty, staff, and students, creating a vibrant learning community where different
perspectives are valued and celebrated. Ultimately, prioritizing cultural competency
not only enhances the educational experience but also equips individuals with essential
skills for navigating an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.
