Program Information

Mohawk Valley Community College has partnered with the Oneida County Sheriff's Office to offer the Police Pre-Employment Training Program, a quick-start alternative to traditional police academies, which require that a cadet be hired as a police officer before beginning training. In the case of pre-employment training, there is no such requirement. 

The mission of the Police Pre-Employment Police Training Program is to  train individuals who have the potential to become honest, ethical, knowledgeable, competent and fit law enforcement officers. Pre-Employment recruits receive 85% of the basic training required to become police officers in New York State, including emergency vehicle operation, defensive tactics, basic patrol tactics and procedures, and an educational foundation in law, all taught by law enforcement officials and MVCC adjunct faculty. The course is directed by Troy Little, who is retired from the New York State Police.

Pre-Employment students do not receive firearms training, counter-terrorism awareness training, any defensive tactics that involve the use of a police baton, or field training. Additional training to complete the Basic Course for Police Officers can only be obtained once a student has been hired by a police agency and becomes a sworn police officer.

Individuals wishing to enter the Police Pre-Employment Training Program must meet the following requirements prior to being considered for the program:

  • Be a citizen of the United States of America or lawfully reside within the United States
  • Be at least 19 years old at the start of the program
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony
  • Possess either a high school diploma or a General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Be prepared to engage in a strenuous fitness program

Once all the above requirements are met, an individual would need to:

  • Be medically evaluated to determine if they are physically able to participate in training
  • Successfully complete a board interview
  • Be willing to sign the “Student  Warning Notice” that explains the actual value of  Police Pre-Employment Training
  • If accepted, follow all rules as described in the Rules and Regulations of Police Pre-Employment Training
  • If accepted, a student may miss no more than 10% of classes, and may miss no classes in which attendance is mandated by the State of New York

The cost of this program is the applicable cost of two semesters of full-time tuition/fees plus uniforms and books (approx. $1,000).

College credits are awarded for completing courses during Law Enforcement Certificate or Law Enforcement Degree.

Financial aid is available. Contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information.

Students must be at least 20 years of age. There is no maximum age.

The class will meet on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Classes are held on the Utica Campus of Mohawk Valley Community College.

The program starts each year at the end of August.
