An international student is a student who is a citizen of a country other than the United States of America who does not hold permanent residence or a valid green card within the U.S. If you are an international student who wishes to come to the United States in order to complete a college degree, you will be required to complete the International Application.

Once the International Application is complete, the International Admissions Office will issue the form I-20 to the eligible student. Following receipt of the Form I-20, the student will need to apply and obtain an F-1 student visa from the American Embassy in your home country. Students to whom this applies should fill out the international student application. If you have any additional questions, please contact international.admissions@mvcc.com or smiller@mvcc.edu.

TRANSFER STUDENTS:

If you are currently in the U.S. as an F-1 student already, and have maintained status you are still required to submit the international application. Once the application is complete, the transfer process will then take place. You will be required to submit the International Student Transfer Form. Please click here for the form.

REINSTATEMENT:

If you are currently in the U.S. and are in violation of your F-1 student status, you might have to apply for a reinstatement. You will have to complete the international application and submit all necessary documentation to International Student Services. Once your application is complete and you are accepted, International Student Services will assist in the reinstatement process. Learn more about reinstatement here.

CHANGE OF STATUS:

Students residing in the U.S. with a different visa type may not be required to change their status to an F-1 Student Visa. Students in this situation should contact International Student Services regarding their specific situation. Learn more about Change of Status here. You can also refer to the USCIS information here to see if you qualify for a Change of Status.

Placement Tests

MVCC Placement Tests

TOEFL and IELTS are not required for admission into MVCC. International students are required to take math and English placement tests upon arrival to the College if they do not submit appropriate TOEFL, IELTS, or SAT scores. The English and math placement tests determine the student's language and math abilities respectively, as well as placement in the appropriate English or math courses. Placement will be at the discretion of the College in accordance with each student's individual needs.

Students may be placed into college-level coursework or the English as a Second Language Program based on the results of these tests.

Academic Program/College-level Coursework Requirement

Scores on standardized tests are valid for two years, so the test date must not exceed two years prior to the date of admission. Students will be fully admitted into college-level coursework if they submit one of the following scores:
• TOEFL PBT: 500
• Computer-based TOEFL: 173
• TOEFL iBT: 61
• IELTS: 5.5

Intensive English Program (IEP)

MVCC will launch an Intensive English Language Pilot Program in the fall 2016 semester. The program is intended for international students and other non-native speakers of English who have a strong command of their native language, some study of English in their background, and ample time to commit to their college study.

Students must have the following base scores to be admitted into the IEP program:
•     TOEFL PBT: 437-497
•     Computer-based TOEFL: 123-170
•     TOEFL iBT: 41-60
•     IELTS: 5.0

Financial Sponsor and Verification Forms

International students who are seeking admission and a Form I-20 are required to complete the Financial Sponsor Form (see link below) and show sufficient proof of funding prior to admission at Mohawk Valley Community College. This form should be completed by the student as well as the financial sponsor. The international application will not be considered complete until the International Admissions Office receives proof of financial sponsorship.
