Description: This is an annual award given to a student who shows a high level of academic achievement
in General Biology for two semesters. It is open to students who have successfully
completed 30 credits of study with at least a 2.75 GPA and who have also completed
both semesters of General Biology with at least a grade of B. In addition, applicants
must submit a short essay of 500-750 words detailing the role and value of the biological
sciences in their academic preparation. Students should also include their future
goals and career plans. Applications must be accompanied by 1 faculty letter of recommendation.

Description: For his entire 36-year career at MVCC, Professor Sam Drogo (MrD) was the heart and
soul of anatomy and physiology instruction. Because of his dedication to teaching
and mentorship, countless of his students have gone on to stimulating and productive
careers in healthcare, medicine, science and education. This $1,000 scholarship in
his memory is intended to recognize and reward a student who has excelled in the college’s
Anatomy & Physiology course sequence. It is open to students who have successfully
completed 30 credits of study with at least a 3.0 GPA and who have also completed
both semesters of Human Anatomy & Physiology with at least a grade of B. In addition,
applicants must submit a short essay of 500-1,000 words detailing the role and value
of Anatomy & Physiology in their academic preparation and career plans and goals.

Description: James Fiore is a retired MVCC professor who worked at MVCC for over 40 years, sharing
his love of science with his students. Both he and his wife, Karen Schaffer, have
a passion for science and a love of endurance sports. Both are firm believers in
the dictum of a sound mind in a sound body, and encourage students along the same
path. Upon Professor Fiore’s retirement, both he and his wife, established this scholarship
as a way to give back to students pursuing a career in engineering or computer science.

Description: NYSTEC is a not-for-profit technology consulting company, advising organizations, agencies, institutions, and businesses since 1996. The NYSTEC Technology Scholarship is open to full-time students majoring in Cybersecurity, with preference given to students taking classes on the Rome Campus.
Availability: Both Incoming and Returning Students
Amount Awarded: $2,000 maximum award ($500 per semester for 4 semesters) $500 per semester for tuition
and fees. If tuition costs and fees are covered by financial aid or other resources,
funds may be used for other educational expenses. Maximum award is $2,000 for qualifying
applicants. Automatically renewed for recipients meeting enrollment and grade requirements.

Description: Utica National Insurance is a strong presence in the community thanks to one of their
leaders, Jack B. Riffle, who served as president from 1974 until his death in 1986.
Mr. Riffle became a widely respected as a perceptive thinker and articulate communicator,
with both the spoken and written word. Mr. Riffle’s sudden death brought a remarkable
career to a premature close, and it is in his memory this scholarship is dedicated.
