Description: This scholarship was set up in memory of Dr. Francis R. Dunning who was a scientist
and innovative educator. Dr. Dunning taught math and science at Madison Central, Frankfort
and Herkimer Central School before starting his career at Mohawk Valley Community
College where he was Professor in the Physical Science Department and Dean of the
Division of Technology and Business. He taught from 1963 to 1995. He pioneered use
of industry advisory committees, and led the creation of programs in Chemical Technology,
Photonics and Solar Energy Technology. He won several prestigious National Science
Foundation grants, and received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional
Service, in 1990. Professor Emeritus Dr. Francis R. Dunning was inducted into the
MVCC Hall of Fame, in October 2003.

Description: This scholarship was created by MVCC alumnus, Brian Wester, who enrolled at MVCC as
a returning adult student at the age of 35, graduating in 1983 with a degree in Biology.
He continued his education at SUNY ESF with a degree in Paper Science and Engineering,
and was employed by Hammermill Paper Co., Thilmany Paper, Weyerhaeuser, and Domtar.
Working in pulp and paper mills, provided technical support, and worked in R&D - holds
18 U.S. Patents.
Brian’s mother immigrated from Germany in 1922, when she was nine years old. She did not graduate high school, but went on to become self-educated, and spent many years working as an assistant librarian. She was very involved in her community founded her children’s school PTA, served as a cub scout leader, volunteer election worker, on the library board and local cultural committee.
Brian’s father was a pattern maker, making patterns for metal castings and wooden models. Henry did not attend college but provided for his family and community as a boy scout leader, part-time policeman, volunteer firefighter and fire chief.
Brian and his brother were the first generation of their family to attend college.
This scholarship honors the values and lessons Brain learned from his parents and
supports the needs of current MVCC returning adult students by providing scholarships
for tuition, fees and books.

Description: Larry Brinker is the former CEO of the NUAIR Alliance, a New York based not-for-profit
coalition of more than 200 private and public entities and academic institutions working
together to operate and oversee Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) testing in New York,
Massachusetts and Michigan. Headquartered in Syracuse, NY, the NUAIR Alliance supports
the New York UAS Test Site at Griffiss International Airport in Rome, NY, one of just
seven FAA-designated UAS test sites in the United States. They are at the forefront

Description: Louis A. Falvo, Jr. was born and raised in Utica. He attended Utica area schools
and graduated from L. C. Smith College of Engineering at Syracuse University and received
his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1959. Louis was a true gentleman, family
man and successful businessman who contributed much to his community. Giving back
to the community was extremely important to Louis. He believed that philanthropic
pursuits would allow him to contribute to the success of society.
Louis passed away in March of 2012, and in his memory, his family has established
this scholarship to be awarded each year to a graduating student who is pursuing further
study for an advanced degree in engineering or construction management.

Description: This Airframe and Powerplant Technology Scholarship honors Rudolph J. and Shirley J. Goebel’s love of aviation and also their long friendship with John ‘Laddie’ and Alice Leitz who fostered and supported their common interest.
Having worked hard their entire lives while building their own homes and raising and educating their children, Rudy was finally able to embrace flying after their own ‘birds’ had fledged. Shirley always was there to assist and support, and spent many pleasant hours with Alice and Laddie while Rudy earned his wings at the Frankfort-Highland Airport. After retiring Rudy built two airplanes and continued his interest in the airplane ‘communities’ in other parts of the country.

Description: Utica National Insurance is a strong presence in the community thanks to one of their
leaders, Jack B. Riffle, who served as president from 1974 until his death in 1986.

with both the spoken and written word. Mr. Riffle’s sudden death brought a remarkable
career to a premature close, and it is in his memory this scholarship is dedicated.
