RAIN Hostage Situation
If you are witness to a hostage situation:
LET THE POLICE HANDLE IT!
NOTIFY PUBLIC SAFETY IMMEDIATELY.
If you are a hostage:
Remain calm, avoid sudden movement, avoid panicking, do not argue
Be patient and wait for authorities to take action.
Be observant, and do not be surprised by mood swings or irrational actions from the captor.
Listen and do as asked to the degree possible. Do not attempt to rationalize with the captor. Immediately follow any direction of emergency personnel.
TO REMAIN SAFE:
Recognize when situations may become hostile. Be aware of your surroundings, other individuals and watch for threatening behavior.
Avoid, placing yourself or others in additional danger. Move to a safe location when someone’s behavior becomes threatening.
Isolate yourself from danger. Do not attempt to negotiate with a captor or someone behaving in a threatening manner. Move to a safe location. If someone’s behavior has not reached the point of violence but does make you uncomfortable, contact the Department of Public Safety.
Notify the appropriate resources and authorities.
