MVCC Trustee Mathis elected to Association of Community College Trustees Board of Directors
Nov 27, 2017
Mohawk Valley Community College’s Board of Trustees member David Mathis was elected to a one-year term as the secretary-treasurer to the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Board of Directors’ Executive Committee during the 2017 ACCT Leadership Congress in Las Vegas in September. He also was re-elected as northeast regional director for a three-year term in 2016.
In this position, Mathis will chair the Finance and Audit Committee, serve as secretary to the ACCT Senate, and perform other duties as may be assigned by the chair or Board of Directors, including overseeing the organization’s $8.7 million budget. The secretary-treasurer also serves as one of five members of the ACCT Executive Committee.
Mathis previously served on the ACCT Board from 1990 to 1996 as a northeast regional director, and from 2000 until 2003 as chair of the ACCT Diversity Committee. In 1995, he chaired the ACCT-American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Joint Commission on Federal Relations, and has acted as ACCT New York State chair and state coordinator of the Trust Fund Board and Trustee Advisory Committee.
In 2011, Mathis received the ACCT Northeast Trustee Leadership Award, putting him in the running with winners from the other four regions to win the M. Dale Ensign Trustee Leadership Award (ACCT Trustee of the Year). He went on to win this award, as well.
The ACCT is a non-profit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical, and junior colleges in the United States and beyond. Located in Washington, D.C., ACCT is a major voice of community college trustees to be presidential administration, U.S. Congress, the Departments of Education and Labor and more.
ACCT also educates community and technical college trustees through annual conferences focused on leadership development and advocacy, as well as through publications and online and face-to-face seminars.
Incoming ACCT Chair Emily Yim, from Edmonds Community College in Washington, said this year they will focus on partnerships that advance equity, completion, and workforce issues, as well as continue to foster partnerships with K-12 systems, industry, state and local governments, and community organizations.
Mathis is a 1970 MVCC graduate, and has been successively serving as a trustee since his Oneida County Executive appointment in 1977. He was vice president of the Board in 2010, and has been chair of the Board three times, with terms held from 1983 to 1987, 2004 to 2006, and 2013 to 2015. He also is the president of the MVCC Alumni Association and, as such, is the appointee on the MVCC Foundation Board of Directors. Mathis is employed as director of the Oneida County Workforce Development, a position he’s held since 1988.
Incredibly active in the community, Mathis sits on a variety of other boards, including the House of Good Shepherd Board of Trustees, the Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency Board of Directors, the Stanley Center for the Arts Board of Directors, and the Oneida County BOCES Advisory Council for Career and Technical Education.
Mathis also has received many other awards for his community involvement. Among them are the United Way “Hero Award,” the Oneida County NAACP Achievement Award, the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award, and he was named an Oneida County Historical Society Living Legend.
