MVCC to Host Dual Credit/College Connection Workshop for Area High School Students
Mohawk Valley Community College will host a Dual Credit/College Connection Workshop on Monday, April 29, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Information Technology Building on MVCC’s Utica Campus.
MVCC’s Dual Credit program is a service offered to area high school students that enables them to earn advanced standing or college credit for taking college classes in their own high school. Students typically enroll in 100- to 200-level college courses taught by qualified high school teachers who have been approved by MVCC as adjunct instructors. Courses are identical to those offered on the MVCC campus, but all schoolwork is done in the high school setting.
Dual Credit provides students the opportunity to earn both college and high school credit for the same course. The program has become widely recognized as a unique way of enhancing the typical high school experience, offering motivated students a larger course selection, an alternative to advanced placement courses, a manageable transition to college-level coursework, and a potential means of saving tuition dollars in the long run.
The workshop will discuss the advantages of the Dual Credit program, including academic program and scholarship opportunities, financial information and cost savings of the program, eligibility for MVCC’s new Honors Program, transfer opportunities, athletic programs, and college clubs and organizations. MVCC professionals will be on hand to talk about planning a student’s academic future, MVCC programming, and campus tours. Refreshments will be available.
