MVCC Shines the Light on Domestic Violence

The Mohawk Valley Community College Healthy Lifestyles Committee recently announced that the College’s Utica Campus is participating in this year’s “Shine the Light on Domestic Violence” campaign. For the month of October, the Payne Hall building exterior lights will be tinted purple in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The lighting began at sundown on Oct. 1.

In addition to this month-long recognition, and in association with the YWCA Mohawk Valley, MVCC will host Melissa Loiacano as presenter of “Love Shouldn’t Hurt.” This informative session is an open and honest discussion of dating, dating violence and healthy relationships. It explores topics like consent, drug and alcohol use, and technology as they pertain to healthy and unhealthy relationships.

As the one of the community educators for the YWCA Mohawk Valley, Loiacano has been offering this material to area high schools and colleges to raise awareness of the “red flags” associated with domestic violence. She also provides information regarding services offered to those in need through the local YWCA. This event takes place on the Rome Campus on Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Festine Auditorium, and on the Utica Campus Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. in the Alumni College Center, room 116.

The MVCC Healthy Lifestyles Committee is selling Domestic Violence Awareness wristbands and ribbons, with proceeds benefiting the YWCA Mohawk Valley. The committee also is encouraging all employees and students to wear purple on Oct. 23 in support of the cause.
