Mohawk Valley Community College’s newest residence hall has a new name: Bellamy Hall. The name change, effective immediately, will greet MVCC’s 550 residential students when they move in for the Fall 2013 semester.
The name change, honoring the Oneida County historical figure and author of the “Pledge of Allegiance,” was approved in May by the MVCC Dormitory Corporation Board of Directors. It was suggested by student Resident Advisors.
From its construction in 2005 until now, this residence hall had been referred to as “New Hall.” In keeping with MVCC tradition of naming halls with student input and support from the administration, students explored options for a lasting name that would better reflect the hall’s importance to campus life. MVCC President Randall J. VanWagoner convened a task force of RAs and gave them responsibility for researching and selecting a name.
The top three suggestions provided were Bellamy Hall, Seneca Suites, and Roosevelt Hall. Bellamy Hall was chosen in honor of Francis Julius Bellamy, the original author of the Pledge of Allegiance. Bellamy, a Baptist minister, was born in Mount Morris, NY and attended Rome Free Academy. As a prominent leader in the public education movement, Bellamy was selected as chairman by the National Education Association to promote the schoolhouse flag movement at the 400th Columbus Day celebration. He structured this public school program around a flag raising ceremony and a flag salute, his Pledge of Allegiance. This remains are laid to rest in a family plot locate in Rome.
The three-story, 41,000-square foot building is located at the eastern end of the current residence hall complex, and features five-person suites in combination of double and single rooms. Bellamy hall house both first and second-year students, and since its inception, has brought MVCC’s total on-campus residence capacity to more than 500 students. It is on of five residence halls on MVCC’s Utica campus. MVCC has had residence halls for longer than any other community college in New York State.
