May 28, 2014
Nicolai Giedraitis, a recent Engineering Science graduate from Mohawk Valley Community College, received a $400 scholarship from the New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC). He also won a competitive research opportunity at Cornell University, where he will spend eight weeks this summer doing research at a particle physics lab and earn a stipend of $3,920. This is the fourth time in the past five years that an MVCC student has been awarded this research scholarship.
Giedraitis, a May graduate of MVCC, plans to transfer to Clarkson University, where he has received a Transfer Leadership Award. He plans to earn his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
Each year, NYSMATYC awards are granted to mathematics students in New York State who expect to transfer from a two-year college and who plan to continue their studies in mathematics or a related field. Recipients must have completed at least one year of calculus, have at least a 3.5 grade point average in completed mathematics courses, and a 3.3 G.P.A. overall.
Giedraitis, of North Brookfield, received many honors during his time at MVCC. He had been the valedictorian of his class at Brookfield Central School and came to MVCC as an Exceptional Student Scholar. While at MVCC, he has received the Outstanding Student Scholarship for two years, and the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. He also has been named to the MVCC President’s List and works as a tutor for math, chemistry, and physics in the Learning Center. While at MVCC, he has been involved with the Future Engineers Club, WISE group, Sustainability Club, Kayak Club, and Math Club. Giedraitis also participated in the Drama Club’s Variety Show.
