MVCC dedicates Mike Briggs Fitness Center at Jorgensen Center
Jun 26, 2012
Mohawk Valley Community College formally dedicated the fitness center on its Utica Campus in honor of Mike Briggs ’63 on Monday, June 18. On hand at the unveiling of the Mike Briggs Fitness Center were MVCC President Randall J. VanWagoner, Ph.D., County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. ’84, MVCC Athletic Director Gary Broadhurst, and Briggs, along with MVCC coaches and student athletes.
The event was held in the lobby of the new Robert R. Jorgensen Athletic/Events Center on MVCC’s Utica campus. The naming, approved by MVCC’s Board of Trustees and the MVCC Foundation Board of Directors, honors Briggs’ pivotal role in the creation of the Jorgensen Center. Starting Monday, Briggs’ name will be displayed across the state-of-the-art Fitness Center as a sign of his lasting, positive impact on MVCC athletics and all MVCC students’ access to physical fitness and wellness resources.
Briggs, an MVCC Alumnus of Merit Award-winner, played intercollegiate baseball with Jorgensen as his coach. After MVCC, Briggs went on to a successful career in which he rose to the executive ranks of UPS. Briggs is a longtime supporter of MVCC through an endowed scholarship fund in his name, planned giving, and numerous other gifts. Through his personal philanthropy and advocacy on behalf of MVCC, Briggs catalyzed more than $5 million in private-sector donations which helped elevate the concept of the Center into the showpiece athletic practice and performance center for the MVCC students of today. It was Briggs’ suggestion that the Center be named in honor of Jorgensen, the longtime coach and athletic director who led the MVCC Hawks from humble beginnings to national prominence.
At Monday’s ceremony, VanWagoner, Picente, and Broadhurst spoke on the important history of MVCC Hawks athletics, and Briggs was recognized in person.
