Apr 27, 2018
The Mohawk Valley Community College Cultural Series is wrapping up the Spring semester with an array of performances and lectures in both Utica and Rome.
On Tuesday, May 1, MVCC Instructor Scott Eaton, Ph.D., will give a lecture on “Mind Hunting: Classifying the Monsters that Live Among Us” at 5 p.m. in Information Technology Building room 225 at the College’s Utica Campus. The presentation will focus on the history of serial homicide, society’s fascination with the people who commit these crimes, and the systems used to classify them. He will give the lecture again on Thursday, May 3, at 5 p.m. in Plumley Complex room 120 at the Rome Campus. Admission is free.
Also on May 1, pianist David Kim will perform some of the great works of classical piano literature at 7 p.m. in Schafer Theater, Information Technology Building, at the Utica Campus. Kim, who is from the Utica area, will perform Beethoven’s Sonata op. 57, “The Appassionata,” and Liszt’s “Two Legends,” along with pieces by Rachmaninoff and Mompou. Admission is $5 general, $2 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.
On Thursday, May 3, author and former child star Lisa Jakub will give the lecture, “Not Just Me” at 6 p.m. in Schafer Theater at the Utica Campus. Jakub spent her formative years growing up in the public eye as a child actor, appearing in hit films “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Independence Day.” But, behind the scenes, she struggled with social anxiety and severe panic attacks. Since leaving Hollywood, she has turned her attention to writing about how so many suffer from the same issues and will discuss what she learned while promoting her new book, “Not Just Me.” Admission is $5 general, $2 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.
On Monday, May 7, the MVCC and Utica College Combined Concert Bands will perform a concert at 7 p.m. in Schafer Theater at the Utica Campus. Admission is free.
Tickets for all Cultural Series events can be purchased in person at the MVCC Box Office, Information Technology Building room 106, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday, and at the College Stores on the Utica and Rome Campuses; online any time at www.mvcc.edu/tickets; or by calling 315-731-5721.
