Mohawk Valley Community College’s women’s and men’s basketball team will hit the hardwood for a good cause by hosting the annual Torchia Classic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 1-3, in the Performance Gymnasium of the Jorgensen Complex on the Utica Campus.
The men’s portion of the tournament opens Friday at 6 p.m. when Jefferson Community College squares off with Genesee Community College. At 8 p.m., the MVCC Hawks will take on Queensborough Community College. The action continues on Saturday with the consolation game at noon and the championship matchup at 2 p.m.
The women’s portion of the tournament will be a Classic format beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday with Jefferson Community College playing Herkimer County Community College followed by the Hawks playing Genesee Community College at 7 p.m. Sunday’s games will see Herkimer CCC playing Genesee CC at noon, followed by MVCC playing Jefferson CC at 2 p.m.
The Torchia Classic benefits the Anthony Torchia Memorial Scholarship, named in memory of 19-year-old Anthony Torchia whose life was ended prematurely in a tragic car accident on May 6, 2000. The Anthony Torchia Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving students in the Electrical Engineering curriculum.
As part of the festivities, three members of the Utica Comets hockey team will be on hand to greet fans sign autographs beginning Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Jorgensen Complex. This tournament also marks the launch of the new MVCC athletic website at www.gomvhawks.com.
Tickets are $3 for each two-game session or a tournament pass can be purchased for $5.
