Grant funding renewed for MVCC’s iServe Mohawk Valley volunteerism program
May 3, 2018
Mohawk Valley Community College’s iServe Mohawk Valley, a volunteerism program working to reduce local hunger, had its grant funding through the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and the New York State Commission on National and Community Service/Volunteer Generation Fund Program renewed for an additional three years.
To meet its mission, iServe Mohawk Valley has a constantly expanding network of collaborations with local community services, including the Ava Dorfman Senior Center, Food Bank of CNY, Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen, Rome Salvation Army, and Rome Rescue Mission. iServe Mohawk Valley provides volunteers to agencies to enable them to focus their services on the more urgent needs of the community.
“The iServe Program is combatting hunger and food insecurities by utilizing volunteers to rethink and reuse food resources and plan for a more sustainable future, while lending a hand to the vital work already being accomplished in our area,” said Program Coordinator Kelly Fleming.
Program volunteers lend their time to various organizations across the county, including Ava Dorfman Senior Center, Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen, Rome Rescue Mission, Sodexo Dining Hall, MVCC “Campus Cupboard” student food pantry, Mother Marianne’s West Side Kitchen, Salvation Army, and Utica Soup Kitchen.
Volunteers actively engage in the fight against hunger by preparing and serving meals, teaching nutrition classes, running community food drives, fundraising and community participation, giving away fresh foods, helping with clothing drives, planting and maintaining raised bed gardens, and more. Opportunities to volunteer are available for both one-time events and for ongoing commitments.
