3 MVCC students receive SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence
Apr 25, 2018
On Tuesday, April 10, SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson presented the 2018 Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence to 249 students from across the university system. Three MVCC students were among those who earned this honor: Christine Edwards, Mya Kyaw, and Claire Parisi.
Edwards, of Ilion, is an Air-Conditioning Technology: Refrigeration major. She is a non-traditional student returning for a second degree after a 30-year career in marketing. Edwards has maintained a 4.0 GPA, is an honors student, and is the recipient of several MVCC scholarships. She is engaged on campus and is highly active in community service in her hometown of Norwich. She has two school-aged boys.
Kyaw, of Myanmar, Burma, is majoring in Biology. After immigrating to the U.S., Kyaw began her studies at MVCC in 2015, and aspires to become a doctor. During her time at MVCC, Kyaw has excelled academically and personally. She is president of the College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges; a peer tutor in the Learning Commons; and a mentor for international students. She also is a member of CSTEP, Student Congress, and many clubs.
Parisi, of Utica, is majoring in Engineering Science. She is committed to excellence by maintaining her high GPA while balancing extracurricular activities. She is Vice President of Scholarship for MVCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, a member of the Future Engineers Club and Student Congress, and is a participant in the MVCC Student Leadership Academy. Along with her on-campus activities, Parisi interns at the Rome Air Force Research Lab, provides private math tutoring for high school students, and volunteers at FIRST Robotics tournaments.
The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.
Each year, SUNY campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews the accomplishments of exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor’s Office for a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award. Each recipient receives a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.
