Acronym/Term

Definition

Annualized FTE (AFTE)A hypothetical measure equating 30 hours to one full-time student. For instance, if the total number of hours taught at MVCC for the academic year is149,520, that equals 4,984 full-time equivalent students (149,520 / 30 = 4,984). AFTE is not the same as an FTE.
Continuing StudentA student that was enrolled in the immediately preceding fall semester (spring students) or spring semester (fall students). Summer and Intersession are not considered.
Cross Registered StudentA student matriculated and enrolled full-time at another SUNY college taking one course at MVCC that is applicable to their program at the other college. For more information go to Cross Registration.
Enrollment HeadcountThe number of students enrolled in credit courses and/or developmental courses eligible for financial aid. Cross registered students are not included.
Equivalent Credit HoursFor non-credit courses, billing hours, or the credit hours that a student would have accrued if the course was a credit course.
First-time StudentA student enrolled in any college for the first time. Dual credit classes are not included as college enrollment.
Full-timeBilling hours greater than or equal to 12 hours. Billing hours include credit hours and "equivalent credit hours" for non-credit courses (not community service courses).
Full-time Equivalent (FTE)A hypothetical measure equating 15 hours to one full-time student. For instance, if the total number of hours taught at MVCC for the fall semester is 61,830, that equals 4,122 full-time equivalent students (61,830 / 15 = 4,122). FTE is not the same as an Annualized FTE.
GPA HoursCredit hours used in  GPA calculation. They include any class taken for credit (excludes non-credit classes) and a grade of A, B, C, D, or F. A course is only included once - if the course is repeated only the class with the highest grade is included.
Grade Point Average (GPA)

A cumulative measure of the grades a student receives over their career - MVCC uses a 4.0 scale.

IECInstitutional Effectiveness Council
Low IncomeMVCC uses PELL as a proxy to identify low income students. A student offered a PELL award is identified as low income.
MatriculatedApplied to and accepted into an official program of study at MVCC, including degrees and certificates.
Mohawk ValleyFulton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego, and Schoharie counties
Part-timeBilling hours less than 12 hours. Billing hours include credit hours and "equivalent credit hours" for non-credit courses (not community service courses).
Persistence/RetentionEnrollment in the following semester - spring for fall students and fall for spring students.
Quality Points

GPA Hours multiplied by the number that corresponds to the grade received: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. 

Example: A student earns an A in English 1, which is 3 credit hours

Quality Points: 4 x 3 = 12

Race/EthnicityMVCC records Race/ethnicity as defined by Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), including: Hispanic, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, White, Twor or more races, Unknown race/ethnicity, and Nonresident Alien.
Returning StudentA student returning after missing the previous fall/spring semester.
