Student Perspective on Bandwidth
Presenter: Cia Verschelden
We all understand about the things that steal bandwidth from students – and ourselves
– and we’ve talked about ideas to help students reclaim it. What is the student perspective
on bandwidth? What is their reported experience with feeling bandwidth-depleted and
what are their ideas about the most effective ways to recover? Cia will share a few
ideas and then we’ll listen to the students’ voices in what is sure to be a very informative
discussion.

I feel like Ick!
Presenter(s): Robert Huyck
I've felt like ick! I'm tired all the time. Maybe I'm sad I lost someone these last
two years. Maybe I'm upset I have gained weight. Maybe my social network was cut off
and the last two years have created a void. Do I whine too much about my feeling poorly
or am I being healthy in getting it off my chest. This open forum is for anyone to
attend and get their feelings off their chest. Talk with others who are feeling the
same way. No one will judge you. The hopeful outcome of this forum will be to feel
better afterward.

What IF? - Exploring the Future Through Scenario Planning
Presenter(s): Randall VanWagoner
Living in turbulent times is not easy and we all need to find ways to reduce our anxiety.
Chip Conley says the formula for anxiety=uncertainty X powerlessness. Scenario planning
can be an empowering way to gain more certainty about the future and reduce anxiety
- ironically, by creating scary (but intriguing) scenarios about the future and sitting
with them for awhile. By taking our minds into these near unimaginable scenarios we
demystify the unknown by intentionally facing our fears. This session is an opportunity
to participate in an engaging session and begin building this important habit for
a more resilient future.

How do we minimize stereotype threat and microaggressions?
Presenter: Cia Verschelden
Stereotype threat, what Claude Steele calls, "the threat in the air" and microagressions,
those small insults, slights, and invalidations that plague people who have certain
identities, deplete the bandwidth of our students and ourselves. In this session,
Cia will engage participants in a discussion of strategies to minimize both of them
by being intentional about learning and working environments.

Belonging and the Learning Zone – learning together at MVCC
Presenter(s): Cia Verschelden
Tom Senninger explained what he called the Learning Zone Model in which he described
three zones related to openness to learning, the Comfort Zone, the Learning Zone,
and the Panic Zone. Some learning happens in the Comfort Zone and almost none in the
Panic Zone. When we feel safe and respected and seen – and feel like we belong – we
can enter together into the Learning Zone where we can be honest, vulnerable, and
authentic and can learn and develop as individuals and organizations. What can we
do at MVCC so we all can spend more time in the Learning Zone with a goal of organizational
improvement toward equity and effectiveness in and outside the classroom?
