Mohawk Valley Community College once again will host free GenCyber Summer Camps for students and teachers in the Mohawk Valley, funded by the National Security Agency. All camps will begin on Monday, Aug. 14, and run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

These award-winning summer camps are designed to introduce local high school students and teachers to the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity. Last year’s inaugural program won the James C. Hall Jr. Exemplary Non-Credit Program Development Award from the Continuing Education Association of New York for creativity and innovation.

This year, the program has grown to include two different camps. Participants in both camps will apply what they learn to complete a capstone project that challenges them to either defend a computer system from attack or conduct a cybersecurity forensics investigation. Teachers interested in broadening their knowledge in the field while working side-by-side with students are encouraged to attend. Teachers will assemble a basic cybersecurity workstation to bring to their classroom to continue the learning process. Teachers who attend the camp in its entirety will receive a stipend.

The camp options are:

  • Combination Camp: This week-long camp is filled with hands-on activities and laboratory exercises to introduce new students and teachers to the cybersecurity field. It is designed for first-time GenCyber students entering ninth through 12th grades who would like to explore the field of cybersecurity.
  • Advanced Camp: This two-week camp is designed to expand the knowledge of students in grades nine through 12 who attended last year’s GenCyber Camp. Seats are very limited for this camp, so apply today!
