MVCC offers free NYS Security Guard Certification Program funded by Working Solutions

MVCC’s Center for Corporate and Community Education has partnered with Working Solutions in Utica and Rome to offer a fully funded NYS Security Guard Certification Program for individuals that qualify. Participants in this non-credit certificate program will finish the program with all the training, paperwork, and fees in hand to become a licensed NYS Security Guard, ready to work.
8-hour Pre-Assignment Training Course
This is an 8-hour course required by New York State as the first step in obtaining a security guard registration card from the New York State Department of State. The course provides the student with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.
- July 13, Monday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
- Utica Campus
16-hour On-the-Job Training Course
This is a 16-hour course that must be completed within 90 days of employment as a security guard. The course provides the student with detailed information on the duties and responsibilities a security guard. The passing of an examination is required for successful completion of this course.
- July 15 & 16, Wednesday & Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Full scholarships are available which cover all related training costs, application and fingerprinting fees, placement assistance, and all materials. Program cost is $695. Visit the Utica or Rome Working Solutions Office to find out you if you qualify. Working Solutions Offices are located at 207 Genesee St., 2nd floor, Utica, and 300 W. Dominick St., Suite 1, Rome.
To be a qualified NYS Security Guard, applicants must be 18 years of age and have not been convicted of a serious criminal offense. If you have pending criminal charges or a prior conviction, you must provide a statement of explanation and copies of any records received from the criminal court. NYS DMV Identification Number required at time of application. In most cases, applicants must be a citizen or resident alien of the United States. Applicants under obligation to pay child support must certify that they are not four or more months in arrears in the payment of child support, or must certify that they are making payments by income execution or by court-agreed payment or repayment plan or by a plan agreed to by the parties or that their child support obligation is the subject of a pending court proceeding, or they are receiving public assistance or supplemental security income.
Enrollment for these classes is limited and will be taken on a first-come basis. For more information on this program, contact MVCC at 315-792-5300. All MVCC non-credit instruction is completely self-supporting, including indirect costs, and requires no public funding.
