MVCC Engineering Science student awarded RPI Medal transfer scholarship

Mohawk Valley Community College Engineering Science major Monica Jackson, of Utica, has been awarded the Joseph H. Smith Jr. ’45 Engineering & Science Medal from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The award, which honors students for excellence in engineering and math, comes with a transfer scholarship for $18,000 per year for two years of her transfer education at RPI, where Jackson plans to major in Civil Engineering after her graduation from MVCC in May.

Jackson, a graduate of Thomas R. Proctor High School in Utica, has received many other honors during her time at MVCC, including the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (NYSMATYC)’s Award for Excellence in Mathematics, the MVCC Professional Association Scholarship, the SUNY Empire State Diversity Scholarship (Fall 2016), the David Mathis Minority Scholarship, the David and Virginia Ward Scholarship, the Auxiliary Services Corporation Student Leadership Scholarship, and the Susan Q. Chapin Memorial Scholarship.

Jackson also has been very involved on campus while at MVCC, as a member of the Future Engineers Club, C-STEP (Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program), Math Club, and the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society for two-year colleges. She also spent time helping her fellow students as a math tutor in the MVCC Learning Commons.
