Welcome to the ESL: Library Component

College students quickly learn that reading is often linked to researching and retrieving information in the library or on the World Wide Web. The library component of this course will help you to do this kind of research more effectively. As part of ESL4: Advanced Reading, you will be learning to use the MVCC Library. Each week, the class will focus on different ways of searching and on different types of research material.

This Library Component is web-based. That means that the course materials are available online. You may use the computers in PH212, our classroom in the library, or any of the other computers on campus. In addition, you may use your computer at home if you have access to the web. The address is www.mvcc.edu/~esearles.

During each class, I will be there to answer your questions and to help you understand the materials in each lesson, but you are responsible for reading the on-line text and for completing the work of each lesson on time. There will be weekly quizzes and assignments and a final project to evaluate your progress.

Print copies of assigned "Tasks" will be distributed each week and collected at the beginning of the following class. Assignments will usually need to be completed in the library because they often require the use of library materials in addition to those available online.

Library and lab hours are posted.

In order to complete this library component successfully, each student must do the following:

  1. Attend each class. Be on time.

  2. Complete readings and assignments on time.

  3. Prepare for a weekly quiz.

  4. Ask questions!

At the end of the semester, you will know many things about research in the library and on the Internet. This knowledge will help you to be a better student in all of your future courses at MVCC. I hope you'll enjoy this learning experience and that you'll have some fun along the way!
