Color Harmony and Contrast

This exercise encourages students to use compositional concepts such as scale, balance, overlap or interposition, and figure/ground reversal in addition to exploration in color contrasts and color harmonies. Emphasis is placed on the division and analysis of space within the format and the application of value and color.

Using two typographic figures and one symbol/dingbat in each compositional solution, students create a series of square graphic compositions that illustrate color combinations as outlined by Bauhaus instructor and color theorist Johannes Itten.

Students are encouraged to explore the position, location, size/scale, of each of the 3 different compositional elements combined with the compositional concepts of overlapping or interposition, balance, harmony, and contrast.
