Using one letterform or numeral AND one basic geometric shape, students are asked to develop a series of four visual solutions exploring and experimenting with the conceptual ideas of highly representational, representational, abstract representational and abstract with respect to legibility and readability in a two-dimensional composition. Students are encouraged to utilize the "Interrelationships of form," concepts as described by Wucious Wong.

graphic compositions STEP ONE
Experiment with the size, position and orientation of figures within the format.
Each figure must be separate.
Emphasis is placed on the readability of figures
connotations: simple, stable, static, readable.

graphic compositions STEP TWO
Experiment with the size, position, orientation, overlap, transparency, depth and figure/ground reversal concepts.
Emphasis is placed on the readability of figures while adding visual interest.
connotations: simple, stable, dynamic, readable

graphic compositions STEP THREE
Experiment with contrast in size, position and orientation of figures to create a figure/ground fluctuation.
Portions of both figures must remain within the format area
Emphasis is placed upon further exploration and experimentation while maintaining some sense of identity of the figures.
connotations: active, dynamic, symmetrically or asymmetrically balanced, abstract/slightly representational

graphic compositions STEP FOUR
Experiment with contrast in size, position and orientation of figures to create a figure/ground fluctuation.
Analyze the relationship between the figure and the ground, and crop the format creatively.
Portions of both figures must remain within the format area.
Emphasis is placed on visual interest and compositional balance.
connotations: active, dynamic, asymmetrically balanced, abstract
