Students explore design concepts for the World Wide Web (WWW) while developing an understanding of web-based programming languages including HTML (hypertext markup language and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Web typography, image file formats, hexidecimal color, navigation schemes, basic site planning and basic site structure are presented. Universal Design concepts are emphasized. Prerequisite: GC 141 Digital Illustration.
(X)HTML INTRODUCTION
Graphic Designers utilize a visual vocabulary to help them create, organize and visualize compositions. At the beginning level students learn to manipulate text,images and forms for basic web sites using (X)HTML with an emphasis on content meaning to meet W3C guidelines. The primary objective of this exercise is to assist students develop and understanding of tags, Doctype, page structure, hyperlinks and basic navigation schemes.CSS INTRODUCTION
Cascading Style sheets. In order to design sites that are standards-compliant, students are taught basic syntax for CSS 2. Exercises and site design assignments grow increasingly more complicated as the semester progesses, to include information regarding information architecture, site interface design concerns, and compositional issues with regard to content hierarchies.Students do not use a WYSIWYG editor in this course; they are required to indicate an understanding of the (X)HTML and CSS conventions, as too many of these products encrypt code, and do not require students to learn what happens when they "Click" a button in the latest software application. Contemporary software applications allow users to apply deprecated tags and coding conventions to create non-standards-compliant sites.
