Welcome Back Everyone!

I hope you all had a great summer and are ready for another exciting semester. On behalf of the Learning Center staff, I would like to welcome you all to the Fall 2014 semester. As the director, I would like to provide you with some information about the Learning Center.

The Learning Center is already open for business, and students could receive academic support for math and writing from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. The Rome Campus Learning Center is also open from 8:30 am until 4:30pm this week. Additional tutoring services will begin next week.

The Learning Center provides free tutoring services for any MVCC student interested in receiving help outside of class. Tutoring is provided seven days a week at three convenient locations, AB151 and IT 131 on the Utica campus, and PC117 on the Rome campus.

The Learning Center offers tutoring in a wide range of subjects, including math, science, English, human services, nursing, and other classes as needed. In addition to content-specific assistance, students can also benefit from study skills and time management tutoring and receive help with written assignments. A complete tutoring schedule will be available on our website (http://www.mvcc.edu/academics/online/tutoring) next week.

Academic support in the Learning Center is provided by experienced peer and professional tutors. All peer tutors are recommended by their instructors, must have extensive knowledge of the subject they tutor, and the ability to convey that knowledge to their peers. Professional tutors have strong backgrounds in their subject area at the undergraduate or graduate level. Most of our professional tutors have taught, or are currently teaching, the subject they tutor.

Tutoring is provided on a walk-in basis and by appointments in a relaxed and attentive environment. Students can schedule an appointment with our tutors through our website. Mentored study groups and Supplemental Instruction provide additional support to help motivated students succeed. There are computers available at each location for students to work on their assignments. Further, the Learning Center provides a wide range of handouts for different subjects for additional support.

The Learning Center is a truly wonderful place to learn and grow and one that provides our students with the necessary tools to succeed academically. So, please encourage your students to take advantage of the free academic support we provide.

In addition, the Learning Center tutors or staff members can visit your classes and describe the services available at the Center or they can present a classroom workshop on a specific academic topic. Please consider holding your office hours in the Learning Center. It is a nice way to connect with your students in an informal setting. If you decide to do so, please let me know, and I will post your office hours on the master schedule.

You are welcome to contact me with your ideas or concerns or to let me know if there is anything else that the staff of the Learning Center can do to support your students.
My best wishes to all of you for a successful Fall 2014 semester.
