What is Safe Space?
Safe Space training is an introductory session geared toward individuals who wish to become identified as allies for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning Community at MVCC. This workshop is interactive and will frame the role of LGBTQ allies on and beyond campus and introduce resources for shaping a fully inclusive community. Upon completion of the 4 hour training, individuals will receive a Safe Space sticker to display in their space, letting MVCC students and employees know that the space is safe and judgment-free.
How does a Safe Space Program Work?
The main purpose of a Safe Space program is to visibly mark people and places that are "safe" for LGBT students/faculty/staff. This is accomplished by displaying the MVCC Safe Space Sticker (pictured below). When this sticker is displayed, it stands out as an affirmation of LGBT people and lets others who that they are a safe person to approach for support and guidance. Here at MVCC, we have a Safe Space team made up of dedicated faculty/staff that publicize the program, hand out materials, provide basic training to allies who wish to be involved, and educate the larger MVCC community about the meaning of the stickers and the important of building safe spaces for LGBT students/faculty/staff.
