TEAS Exam Information

Welcome prospective nursing students!

We are excited that you are choosing Mohawk Valley Community College to pursue your goal of becoming a Registered Nurse and want to provide you with important information regarding one of the major steps towards fulfilling that goal.

All students who wish to be considered for a seat in our Registered Nursing program are required to take an entrance exam.  The test for MVCC prospective nursing students is called the “Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)” and is designed to assess your aptitude for success in the Nursing program.  Higher scores correlate with a higher probability of success in the program.  We require a minimum adjusted individualized total score on the TEAS V test of 58.7 to be considered for the program.  Your score will determine your ranking for admission along with prerequisite course grades.  The exam creators' website provides some additional information here.

It is important to do well on this exam, as students who score higher on the TEAS in comparison to other applicants will be more favorably considered for admission into our Nursing program.

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is comprised of four (4) sub-tests:

This sub-test covers whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions and decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion.

This sub-test covers science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, basic physical principles, and general science.

This sub-test measures knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling.

This sub-test covers paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions.

The table below explains how the 170-item, four section, multiple-choice assessment is broken down, including how many items and the time allotted for each section:
