The MVCC women's soccer team is headed back to defend its NJCAA national championship after defeating Finger Lakes Community College in a shootout during the Region III championship at Tompkins-Cortland Community College on Saturday.
The game was a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation with MVCC advancing 3-2 on penalty kicks. Nicole Burline converted the final penalty kick for the MVCC women's soccer team, lifting the Hawks past FLCC.
MVCC goalkeeper Vanessa Jecko stopped two FLCC penalty kicks during the shootout and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Jecko had 12 saves.
MVCC (15-2-1) is the defending National Junior College Athletic Association Division III champions and returns to the national tournament Nov. 6-10 at Tompkins-Cortland.
Sophomore Meghan Carlo scored for MVCC in the first half with an assist from Ashley O'Connor.
Brittany Maggio tied the game three minutes later for FLCC (13-4-1).
Burline, Carlo and Silvana Giovannone converted PKs for MVCC in the best-of-five shootout round. Giovannone and Carlo were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
