Utica GEAR UP Celebrates National GEAR UP Week with a GO Evergreen Park Groundbreaking on Sept. 23
Utica GEAR UP has announced its kick-off celebration of National GEAR UP Week 2013. The local effort, housed at Mohawk Valley Community College, will celebrate the continuing success of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), a college access program providing students and families the support and resources they need for college success, with a GO Evergreen Park groundbreaking ceremony. Since its inception in 1999, GEAR UP has improved educational outcomes for millions of low-income, minority and disadvantaged students across the United States, including approximately 750 Utica GEAR UP students.
“Utica GEAR UP's commitment to ecology has been evident right from the start,” says Linda Tettamant, Coordinator of Utica GEAR UP. “Our students are passionate about keeping their school clean and about giving back to Planet Earth. This project is a natural.”
As a part of National GEAR UP Week, Utica GEAR UP, in collaboration with Oneida Herkimer Solid Waste Authority, will be breaking ground on the GO Evergreen Park on the MVCC campus on Monday, September 23rd at 2:45pm between the Alumni College Center and the InformationTechnology building. GEAR UP was awarded a $500 grant from NYSAR3 (New York State Association of Reduction, Reuse and Recycling) last fall to spend on a continuing Go Green initiative. Now that the location has been secured, GEAR UP students, freshmen at Proctor, can visit the campus and the park along with the college community. Students will also help in the sustainability of the park through a composting initiative to begin this year with the help of MVCC’s Sodexo and OHSWA.
