SUNY Chancellor Zimpher visits MVCC to recognize nationally honored students, gathered retirees
State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher Ph.D. today visited Mohawk Valley Community College to recognize the achievements of MVCC students Carlos Pulquerio and Pawser Soe. Zimpher presented the students with Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society medals and SUNY Chancellor’s Awards, SUNY’s highest honor for students. The honors were presented during the College’s first-ever Retirees Luncheon, a gathering celebrating MVCC’s retired employees. More than 100 people were in attendance.
Also during the luncheon, MVCC President Randall J. VanWagoner announced that Soe and Pulquerio have received Gold Team honors in the Coca-Cola Scholarship competition for community college students. Soe and Pulquerio are two of only 50 students nationwide to receive the honor this year. He further announced that a third MVCC student, Andrew Platt, will receive the Chancellor’s Award in Albany this week; Soe and Pulquerio received their awards today because they will be traveling to the international conference of Phi Theta Kappa in California this week.
Pulquerio of Boonville came to MVCC as an international student from Brazil. He is a Liberal Arts and Sciences major with a Biology emphasis in Pre-Med. Since arriving at MVCC, Pulquerio has earned many academic achievements, including being named to the President’s List and Vice President’s List, and being chosen for Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. He has also received the Gioia Murine Memorial Scholarship, Theodore “Ted” Moore Memorial Scholarship, and the David and Virginia Ward Scholarship. His GPA is 3.7.
Pulquerio is a student leader, currently serving as president of Student Congress, the Lambda Beta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the Latino Student Union and the Math Club. He is active on the Program Board, International Club, Collegiate Science Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), and is an Orientation Leader. Pulquerio has also been involved in the community through service activities, including Intergenerational Clean-Up, American Heart Run & Walk, Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Team MVCC 4-Runners Club, Super Storm Sandy Relief, MVCC Foundation Major Gifts Campaign, Ted Moore Run and Walk, and the AIDS Hike for Life.
Soe of Utica is an International Studies major. Originally from Burma, Soe was forced into a refugee camp in Thailand, where she was able to escape her war-torn homeland before moving to the United States. She has earned an impressive list of academic achievements, including being named to the President’s List and Vice President’s List, and membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Soe also won the Professional Association Scholarship. Her GPA is 3.9
Beyond her academic achievements, Soe has been an Orientation Leader for both traditional and returning adult students. She is an active member of the International Club, Women in Science and Engineering Club, and the Gay/Straight Alliance. Soe is also active in the community with organizations such as the Red Cross, Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees, New York State Migrant Education Program, Crohns and Colitis Foundation, and the Utica Rotary Club.
