MVCC to host NanoDays, ‘the biggest event for the smallest science’

Ever wonder how 3D images are made or what gives the Blue Morpho butterfly its bright, shimmering hue?

The answer is simple: Nanoscience, or the study of objects whose size is on the nanometer scale (a nanometer is one-billionth of a meter).

Mohawk Valley Community College and the Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) will host a day of exploring such tiny phenomena during a NanoDays event Saturday, March 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Information Technology Building first and second floor lobbies on the Utica campus. Visitors will learn about many areas of nanoscale science and technology, including 3D imaging and the tiny, colorless scales with nanosized ridges that create the iridescent color of the Blue Morpho butterfly’s wings.

The event will offer learning experiences for both children and adults to explore the miniscule world of atoms, molecules, and nanoscale forces. Demonstrations will combine fun, hands-on activities with presentations on current research. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the special and unexpected properties found at the nanoscale, examine tools used by nanoscientists, and talk with experts about technology and society.

NanoDays, the biggest event for the smallest science, is a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering – an emerging field of science that holds the promise of developing revolutionary materials and technologies – and its potential impact on the future.

“Nanoscale science, engineering and technology offer the potential to impact many areas of our lives,” says Bob Decker, Director of Engineering Technologies at MVCC. “Nanotechnology applications in computers, medicine and material science are transforming everyday products today and will help create exciting new ones tomorrow. Nanotech is also creating opportunities for exciting new careers. Hosting a NanoDays event is one way that we at MVCC can bring an understanding of the science behind nanotechnology to the community and help to show how it will change our world.”

NanoDays is organized by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net), a national community of researchers and informal science educators dedicated to fostering public awareness, engagement, and understanding of nanoscale science, engineering, and technology. MVCC’s Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM Center) prepares students in these fields whether they are seeking a one-year certificate, an associate degree, or transfer to a four-year institution.
