MVCC Remembers Engineering Professor Emeritus
John H. McMillan, Professor Emeritus, passed away in Utica on Dec. 1.
“We are saddened to hear of the loss of someone who did so much to secure MVCC’s longstanding strengths in engineering and technology education. Professor Emeritus McMillan’s long career at MVCC had direct impact on thousands of students and left a legacy of academic excellence that continues to benefit today’s faculty and students,” said President Randall J. VanWagoner, Ph.D.
McMillan joined MVCC in 1965 after a tenured professorship at Clarkson University. At MVCC he became full professor in 1968, and he was appointed department head three times: in 1965 (Civil Technology); 1975 (Civil Technology); and 1984 (Mechanical and Civil Engineering Technology). He retired from MVCC in 1991, whereupon the Board of Trustees conferred emeritus status upon him. The College inducted McMillan into its hall of fame the same year. McMillan was predeceased by his wife, Marie Eustelle McMillan, whose professional contributions are memorialized with an MVCC scholarship fund in her name to benefit MVCC nursing students. The McMillan family is currently organizing another scholarship fund in John McMillan’s name.
“Under Professor Emeritus McMillan’s leadership, MVCC’s civil engineering program reached for prominence on the national level, such as his Fellowship in the American Society of Civil Engineers and membership on the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, known today as TAC-ABET. His service to his college and community was exemplary.”
