3 MVCC Students Receive SUNY’s Highest Award

Three students from Mohawk Valley Community College were selected to receive the 2013 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. All three students will graduate in May. They are Andrew Platt, Carlos Pulquerio, and Pawser Soe.
The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence acknowledges State University of New York students who have demonstrated the integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives, which include arts, athletics, career achievement, community service, and leadership.
Andrew Platt graduated from Camden Senior High School and is an Engineering Science major at MVCC. He has amassed an impressive list of academic achievements, including the MVCC Presidential Scholarship, President’s List Achievement Award, Albert V. Payne Memorial Scholarship, Association of Mohawk Valley Administrators Scholarship, MVCC Class of ’53 Scholarship, and the Auxiliary Services Corporation Scholarship. Platt also is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. His GPA is 4.0
Beyond his academic achievements, Platt has been involved in various extra-curricular activities on campus. He is a member of the Engineering Science Club, a peer tutor in the Learning Center, and an active participant of the Food Service Committee. Platt also participates in the greater community with Rotary International and the United Methodist Church of Camden. Platt has had numerous career achievements, such as helping with the design of a photovoltaic solar power system and working at the Camden Central School District.
Carlos Pulquerio of Boonville came to MVCC as an international student from Brazil. He is a Liberal Arts and Sciences major with a Biology emphasis in Pre-Med. Since arriving at MVCC, Pulquerio has earned many academic achievements, including being named to the President’s List and Vice President’s List, and being chosen for Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. He has also received the Gioia Murine Memorial Scholarship, Theodore “Ted” Moore Memorial Scholarship, and the David and Virginia Ward Scholarship. His GPA is 3.7.
Pulquerio is a student leader, currently serving as president of Student Congress, the Lambda Beta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the Latino Student Union and the Math Club. He is active on the Program Board, International Club, Collegiate Science Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), and is an Orientation Leader. Pulquerio has also been involved in the community through service activities, including Intergenerational Clean-Up, American Heart Run & Walk, Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Team MVCC 4-Runners Club, Super Storm Sandy Relief, MVCC Foundation Major Gifts Campaign, Ted Moore Run and Walk Fundraiser, and the AIDS Hike for Life.
Pawser Soe of Utica is an International Studies major. Originally from Burma, Soe was forced into a refugee camp in Thailand, where she was able to escape her war-torn homeland before moving to the United States. She has earned an impressive list of academic achievements, including being named to the President’s List and Vice President’s List, and membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Soe also won the Professional Association Scholarship. Her GPA is 3.9
Beyond her academic achievements, Soe has been an Orientation Leader for both traditional and returning adult students. She is an active member of the International Club, Women in Science and Engineering Club, and the Gay/Straight Alliance. Soe is also active in the community with organizations such as the Red Cross, Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees, New York State Migrant Education Program, Crohns and Colitis Foundation for America, and the Utica Rotary Club.
