Your password is assigned to you and is available via the link labeled "Login Request Form" one week prior to the start of classes. (Winter session course login information is available one business day prior to the start of classes.)

Yes. There is a $10.00 per credit hour charge for each online course.

Point your browser to studentmail.mvcc.edu. Your username is the first initial of your first name followed by your last name and day of birth (i.e. John Doe who was born on January 5 would be "jdoe05") Your password is generally the last four digits of your SSN.

To be successful in online learning, there are technical requirements to meet and personal attributes to possess.

Do you have regular access to an appropriate computer with an attached printer?

• Your computer should be a Pentium III equivalent or newer and should have at least 64MB RAM. Macintosh users should have system 7 or higher.
• Your computer should have a web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (or higher).
• Your computer should have word processing software capable of saving files as rtf versions. Some courses may have additional software requirements.

Do you have reliable Internet access?

• Broadband Internet access (cable or DSL) is recommended, but dial-up may be passable.
• It¡¦s strongly recommended that this access is available at home, but access through a local library or college computer lab may be an alternative.

Are you reasonably computer literate?

• You should be comfortable navigating the Internet, attaching and detaching files from emails, word processing, and so on.

Are you self-motivated and do you manage your time well?

• Procrastination is often the primary cause of failure in an online course.
• While good online instructors will employ effective techniques to help motivate you, it will really fall on you to motivate yourself in an online course.
• You need to understand that an online course will require a similar time commitment as a face-to-face class (travel time excepted). So, for a three-credit course, a six to nine hour time-commitment per week is reasonable.

Are you comfortable understanding written instructions, grasping the essential points from your reading, and expressing your ideas in writing?

• The primary medium of information exchange is the written word. You have to be comfortable reading and writing it.
• Most instructors expect that even in the discussion boards, standard college English is applied.

Finally, are you interested in learning new things and exploring new ways of learning?

• Online learning can be an exciting way to learn, but you need to be honest with yourself.

To drop an online course only please fill out the online drop form. The form can be used to drop one course at a time. If you are dropping more than one course you will need to fill out the drop form for each course.

Once you know exactly what textbook or other resource you need for your online course¡Xeither from the course itself, which should be open a week before it starts, or by contacting the instructor¡Xyou may purchase this material through the MVCC bookstore or through any online bookseller. Just make sure you get exactly the material the instructor specifies (correct edition, for example).

If this course is in your course list when you enter Blackboard, it probably means that it¡¦s your first online course at MVCC. You should definitely spend the 30 minutes it takes to get through that course, as it will take you through the fundamental elements of the use of Blackboard. Some instructors will actually require their students to complete this short orientation course, so be aware of that.
