Selecting the Right Major

Selecting the right major is an important part of getting started on the right path for academic and career success so we want to help you with that process.

Many students select majors because of their interests (Will I like doing this?), their potential performance (Can I do well in these classes?), the implications for their career (Does this major help me to reach my goals?), and their educational & lifestyle values (What is most important to me?).

Start by asking yourself some of these questions and then utilize the resources below to make sure you have all of the answers you need. Think about
- Why did you select your major?
- What specific research have you done on this particular major and/or?
- Where did you get your information about this new major?
- How did you make this decision?

How will I know what major would be a good fit for me?

  • Take the free FOCUS online assessment which can help you explore areas of interest through tests focused on your values, interests, personality, and skills.  The assessment will suggest careers and MVCC majors that might be a good fit for you based on your responses.  You can create a profile and save your results by accessing FOCUS from the Career Services webpage. You will need your MVCC email address to create an account.
  • Talk to students in your major of interest to learn about their experiences.  You might ask - What do you like about this major? - What do you not like about it? - What are you learning that is especially challenging?
  • Speak with faculty in your major of interest to get their advice.  You can find a list of advisors by major on each center’s website and posted in the advisement center.  You might ask - What kinds of abilities will I develop in this major? - What kinds of careers have graduates of this major gone into? - Which courses are known to be most difficult? - Are there any pre-requisites that I must have? - What do students who enroll in this major say they like about it?
  • Read the degree plan for your major of interest and read about what classes you will be taking.  Are these classes that both interest you and are something you can succeed in?  These can be found on in the college catalog.

How can I learn more about a specific career path?

  • Volunteer or get a part-time job working in your field of interest.  This is a great way to both get additional experience and to see if the career field is a good fit for you.
  • Do an informational interview or job shadow someone in your desired field of work.
  • There are resources in the MVCC library and online that provide great information about the outlook (the number of anticipated job openings), average salary, training & education required, opportunities for advancement in the future, what kind of skills and abilities workers in this field need, and more. Here are some great online resources - My Next Move -- Occupational Outlook Handbook -- New York Career Zone -- Quint Careers
