Rome, New York
A medium-sized city, Rome, NY has a population of about 35,000. It is a very community-oriented city, situated at the base of the Adirondack Mountains. For lovers of the outdoors, Rome is an ideal recreation locale, with skiing, snowmobiling, swimming, camping and boating all within minutes of downtown. Culturally, Rome is home to the Capitol Performing Arts Center, Rome Community Theatre and Rome Art & Community Center.
Rome is a city which boasts a great deal of historical significance. Nicknamed "The City of American History", Rome has an important place in the country's development. Construction of the Erie Canal began here. Fort Stanwix played a pivitol role in the American Revolution. Francis Bellamy, author of the Pledge of Allegiance lived and is buried here. More recently, Rome played a major role in the country's industrial development and was the home of John Dove, a key contributor in the development of the CD-ROM.
