911 Excellence in Community Service

Criteria

Student must be in good standing, including part-time students, who have an extensive record of involvement in their community.

Description

This scholarship was established to honor the spirit of volunteerism and community service always evident in our nation but brought into greater prominence by the events of September 11, 2001.

Alexander Scicchitano Memorial

Criteria

Preference will be given to a student who has done community service work for at least 2 years, especially in assisting the elderly or infirm.Applicant must apply for financial aid.Recipients must maintain a minimum 2.5 G.P.A. to qualify for a second semester award.

Description

The scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior at either Rome Catholic High School or Rome Free Academy.A full one-year scholarship from the earnings of the Scicchitano Memorial Fund endowment will be awarded.

Alumni Association

Criteria

Awarded to deserving students who are children, parents, siblings, spouses, grandparents, grandchildren, step-parents or step-siblings of paid MVCC Alumni Association members.Applicants must have and maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Description

Awarded each fall.

Association of Mohawk Valley Administrators (AMVA)

Criteria

While preference shall be given to sons & daughters of AMVA members, AMVA selection committee may make an award to non-AMVA students based on on academic achievement, college or community involvement and financial need.

Description

Award is given to an incoming freshman or to a continuing senior who is enrolled full-time.

Auxiliary Services Corporation

Criteria

Applicants must be full-time or part-time matriculated students enrolled in a degree or certificate program.Consideration will be given to scholarship and need.Awards will also be based upon applicant's service and participation in one or more of the following areas:1. College Services (Tutoring, College Committees, Special Events)2. Student Services (Student Congress, Clubs, Athletics)3.Community Services (Work with any Service or Religious Organization).

Bob Houston Memorial

Criteria

Award given primarily on financial need.The recipient will be a recent graduate of new Hartford High School or a resident of the Town of New Hartford who plans to attend MVCC.The recipient is required to maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in order to receive the scholarship in the second year.

Description

The New Hartford Rotary Club sponsors this scholarship.

BOCES of Oneida-Herkimer-Madison Counties/MVCC Foundation

Criteria

The awards are based on one being a graduate of BOCES of Oneida-Herkimer-Madison Counties Vocational Technical Schools, and the other to a BOCES student enrolled in the New Visions Program, each of who must be planning to attend MVCC full-time in the FallThe awards are based on demonstrated academic excellence (GPA of 85%, 90% attendance, participation in vocational activities and must have been accepted at MVCC.

Description

It is hoped that the Vocational-Technical Scholarship and the MVCC Foundation Scholarship will help deserving graduates meet their financial obligations at MVCC.

Congressman Donald J.Mitchell Family

Criteria

Applicant must be a full-time MVCC student who is a resident of Oneida, Herkimer, Hamilton, Schoharie and selected townships in Montgomery, Schenectady and Otsego Counties.Applicants must be high school graduates, have academic promise, demonstrate leadership potential, be involved in community affairs and have financial need.

Description

Upon leaving his congressional seat, Mitchell contributed the remainder of his campaign fund balance to the Community Foundation, for the designated purpose of providing scholarships to those attending HCCC and MVCC.

Daron Malik Jae Simpson Memorial

Criteria

The applicant must be a single mother, a high school graduate in good academic standing, be matriculated in a degree or certificate program and enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours of courses in each qualifying semester.Preference will be given to minority residents of the City of Utica who demonstrate financial need and who have taken the initiative to personally improve their lives, and the lives of their families, through employment, training and/or other avenues.

Description

For students who are on the path to self-sufficiency and who have demonstrated a genuine interest in self-improvement.This scholarship is in memory of Daron Malik Jae Simpson who lost his life due to an act of violence on November 10, 2004. He was just over 2 ½ years of age at the time.

David & Virginia Ward

Criteria

Applicants must complete the FAFSA form.Students must have 2.8 G.P.A. during their Freshman year at MVCC, be a resident of New York State, must be enrolled full-time, taking a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester.Eligibility is limited to 2 consecutive semesters of attendance.

Description

To enable a senior student with limited financial resources.Award may be used for tuition, books, fees only.

David Mathis Minority

Criteria

Recommended students must have good grades, have demonstrated leadership qualities, and have at least a moderate degree of financial need.Recipients must maintain full-time (12 or more credit hours per semester) enrollment at MVCC.

Description

This scholarship was established for the purpose of recruiting and attracting potentially deserving minority students to MVCC.David Mathis is now a trustee of MVCC, has served as VP of the MVCC Foundation, is currently director of Employment & Training for Oneida County.

Dr. Armond J. Festine Memorial

Criteria

Part-time students who have demonstrated superior scholarship in view of extraordinary financial, job, or family responsibilities will be eligible to receive the award.

Description

Dr. Festine was a former Dean of Community Services at MVCC.

Edward V. Mele

Criteria

Applicant will be an incoming freshman having recently graduated from high school in good standing or be a first-year MVCC student continuing at MVCC for their second year, also in good academic standing.Candidates must also be residents of Oneida, Herkimer or Madison Counties.

Description

This scholarship is awarded to a student who resides in either Oneida, Herkimer, or Madison County.

Exceptional Student

Criteria

Candidates must be in the top 10% of their class, be enrolled at MVCC for a minimum of 12 credit hours.Accompanying an application must be a letter of verification of being in the top 10% and delineating exceptional extra-curricular credentials, from your high school principal or guidance dept.A copy of a high school transcript and a letter of recommendation.

Description

Full-tuition scholarships are awarded annually to students graduating in the top 10% of their class from accredited New York State public or private high schools located outside Oneida County.

Father David G. Looney Memorial

Criteria

Applicants will be accepted as full-time, matriculated students in a degree or certificate program, will be son or daughter of a Utica fire fighter and will exemplify the ideals, qualities and moral character of Father David G. Looney.

Description

Father Looney was chaplain at SUNY IT, the Utica Fire Department, and at the MVCC Newman Center until his passing in 1988.

Harold T. Fitzpatrick Memorial

Criteria

Any full-time student, regardless of academic major, who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in at least two (2) mathematics courses taken at MVCC is eligible for this award.One of the courses must be a credit-bearing course, numbered MA 105 or above.In addition to the student's performance in math courses, the following criteria will be considered:1. Demonstrated individual growth,2. Overall scholastic achievement,3. Potential for further achievement,4. Demonstrated financial need

These annual awards are made by the Mathematics Dept in memory of Harold Fitzpatrick, who was a member of the department from 1968 through 1973.

Jeremiah McCarthy Family

Criteria

Candidate must be a senior graduating in good standing from Holland Patent High School.

Description

This scholarship is awarded to a student from Holland Patent High School.This scholarship will be awarded for the student’s first year (two semesters).

MVCC Class of '53

Criteria

Applicant must be full-time (min of 12 credit hours) MVCC student who is scheduled to enter their second year in the Fall.Applicants must have a 3.0 G.P.A. and demonstrate academic promise and financial need.**** A 125-word essay on how you meet this criteria is required. ****

Criteria

Applicants must have completed at least 30 credit hours at MVCC at the time of application and must submit a current MVCC transcript reflecting a min 3.0 G.P.A., include 2 letters of recommendation, write a 500-word essay on one of the following topics:1. The Importance of Labor Unions in American Society2. The Value of a Community College Education

Oneida County Foster & Adopted Child

Criteria

Full or part-time students will either be Oneida County residents or will have attended a high school in Oneida County.Applicants will either be currently or formerly in custody of Oneida County’s Dept. of Social Services.

Description

A full-tuition scholarship will be awarded to full or part-time students enrolled at MVCC.

Pat & Fern Fausto Scholarship

Criteria

This award will be given to a full-time first or second year student.This award is to be used toward tuition, fees or books only.

Description

This scholarship was set up in 1993 by Pat in memory of his beloved wife, Fern.Pat passed away in 2004 but his beliefs will live on through this scholarship legacy for many years.

Presidential

Criteria

You must be an Oneida County resident who is a graduate of an Oneida County secondary school ORan Oneida County resident who has graduated from a secondary high school outside of Oneida County ORa resident from a contiguous county who has graduated from an Oneida County secondary school.An applicant is eligible to apply for the scholarship within one year following high school graduation.Each applicant must apply for admission to the College using the MVCC application for admission form.You must enroll on a full-time basis, taking a minimum of 12 credit hours during each semester.You must apply yearly for the PELL and TAP awards, you must maintain a minimum “B” (3.0) average for each semester in attendance to maintain the scholarship.Eligible students will receive a scholarship award of full resident tuition, less amounts awarded by PELL and TAP., Eligibility is limited to four consecutive semesters of attendance.

Description

These scholarships are awarded to the top 10% of his/her high school class.

Senator James H. Donovan Memorial

Criteria

Awarded to high school graduates or matriculated students residing in Oneida, Herkimer, or Lewis Counties.They are based on academic promise, community involvement, and financial self-help.

Description

This scholarship was established in memory of Senator Donovan who passed away in 1990.He was a New York State Senator and represented Oneida, Herkimer and Lewis Counties from 1966-1990.

Sodexho/MVCC Foundation Meal Plan Scholarship

Criteria

Applicants must have maintained at least a 75% high school average.They are selected on the basis of their participation in student and/or community activities prior to admission to MVCC.Eligible students must complete and submit this application with a high school transcript.

Description

This award provides two incoming, full-time students with nineteen (19) meals per week in the MVCC Dining Hall for one semester of their freshman year.

Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial

Criteria

The applicant must be a graduate from Clinton Central School and plans to attend MVCC on a full-time basis.The award is based on a combination of academic promise, need and community service.

Description

This scholarship fund was established in memory of Steven Daniel Smallen who passed away in 1992.Steve was a multi-talented and intelligent individual that was determined to overcome whatever obstacles came his way with his characteristically gentle manner, quick smile and a keen sense of humor.

Students with Disabilities

Criteria

Applicant must be full-time and legally disabled and registered with the MVCC Office for Students with Disabilities, Academic Building 109.The student must maintain at least a 2.0 G.P.A., demonstrate leadership qualities, and have a financial need.

Description

This scholarship, sponsored by the MVCC Students with Disabilities Club, has a goal which is to assist all students with a disability, to extend camaraderie, and to recruit and attract potentially deserving students to MVCC.

Susan Q. Chapin Memorial

Criteria

Applicant must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours min) and have completed at least 30 credit hours.She must have a minimum 2.5 GPS and must be working to her ability and have demonstrated financial need.

Description

This scholarship was established in memory of Susan Q. Chapin by her parents, Mary & Ed Chapin, to pay tribute to their daughter's short yet accomplished life.

The Mike Briggs Scholarship

Criteria

The Scholarship is open to all applicants, but preference is given to students residing out-of-county in keeping with Mike's interest in helping to promote a diverse student base.Applicants must maintain a B average (80%) or better, must be studying full-time (min of 12 credit hours), and will be incoming freshmen or freshman-eligible transfers.Applicants with exceptional extracurricular activities as well as students residing out-of-county and planning to live in the dorms will be given preference.

Description

Established by Mike Briggs '63, to help attract high caliber, well-rounded students to MVCC.Recipients of this scholarship can be justifiably proud, they will also personify many attributes that have helped make Mike's career (Region Mngr-VP, Corporate HQ, United Parcel Services) so successful; diligence, loyalty, appreciation of one's roots.

Theodore "Ted" Moore Memorial

Criteria

Matriculated MVCC students have completed a minimum of 30 MVCC credits, and having a G.P.A. of at least 2.3. Matriculated MVCC students have completed a minimum of 30 MVCC credits, and having a G.P.A. of at least 2.3.Nominees must exemplify the qualities and values of Ted Moore.

Description

Associate Professor Moore joined MVCC in the Mathematics Dept. in 1981.In December 1996, he was tragically taken from his family, friends, students, and colleagues through the actions of a drunk driver.

Utica Job Service Employer Committee, Inc. (JSEC)

Criteria

Preference will be given to students who are enrolled as Business Management Systems majors, but all students are eligible to receive the award.Preference will also be given to full-time students, though part-time students, non-traditional and non-matriculated students are also encouraged to apply.An applicant must be in good academic standing at the time hat his/her application is submitted for review.

Description

This scholarship was developed to assist naturalized citizens who have recently immigrated to the Mohawk Valley and have an interest in becoming a member of the local business community, either as an employee or a business operator.

W. Dennis Copeland Memorial

Criteria

Applicant must be a full-time student in either their first or second year.Financial need is given preference.

Description

This scholarship fund was established by Robert Copeland, Dennis's Brother, and his parents, Jane & Warren in memory of Dennis who passed away in 1980 from cancer.

Women's Christian Association of Utica

Criteria

Preference is given to Oneida County residents.

Description

This association annually supports a number of scholarships for female students, full-time or part-time, attending MVCC.
