MVCC workshops for Teachers & Coaches

Mohawk Valley Community College is working to keep Central New York schools safe and violence-free through two workshops on recognizing and reporting child abuse and preventing school violence. They are also offering a SUNY Youth Sport Workshop. These workshops will be held on the Utica and Rome Campuses. The workshops are offered through MVCC’s Center for Corporate and Community Education. They are:

Coaching Certification Program: Coaching Players & Guiding Parents in Youth Sports
Participants will be instructed in a comprehensive, one-time 2 ½-hour curriculum for non-school youth coaches delivered in easy to understand modules. Topics to be covered include sport psychology, why children play and why they quit, character education and how to teach it, managing parents, conflict resolution, reducing risk, organization and communication tool kit, stages of youth development, the coach as a teacher, overuse injuries and sport specialization, creating an emergency action plan, plus many useful teaching scenarios.

The benefits of receiving the Youth Coaching Certification from the State University of New York include receiving a comprehensive coaching curriculum; state-wide SUNY registration; a coach’s and administrator’s tool kit; and a coaching liability insurance policy, among others. This certification is for a two-year period. Sessions are March 15, 6-9:00 pm, and April 3, 6-9:00 pm.; both on the Utica Campus. Registration cost for either class is $20.
