MVCC to offer Aquatic Safety Training Classes

Spring is here which means summer is just around the corner. Get a head start on finding a summer job by becoming certified as a Lifeguard or Water Safety Instructor. Classes are offered during the April school break (April 8-12) through MVCC’s Center for Corporate and Community Education at the MVCC Utica campus pool, 1101 Sherman Drive.
Lifeguard Training Course
Get the skills and knowledge needed to become a lifeguard. Learn to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to aquatic emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. Prerequisites: Must be able to swim 550 yards continuously with predetermined strokes before the first class session and at least 15 years of age by the last class session. With successful completion, participants receive certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR for the lifeguard. The course runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, 12:00-9:00 p.m.; the cost is $299.
Water Safety Instructor Training
Get the skills and knowledge needed to become a Water Safety Instructor. Candidates will learn how to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics, and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics, as well as the six basic swimming strokes. Students must be 16 years old and do not need to be a lifeguard prior to taking WSI. This course includes the prerequisite course. The course runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 12:00-9:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.; the cost is $299.

All MVCC non-credit instruction is completely self-supporting, including indirect costs, and requires no public funding.
