April Break is right around the corner and Mohawk Valley Community College is once again holding a number of camps to keep kids busy. Students can learn to use a map and compass, get a taste of Arabic, discover the art of magic, or create things out of tape. MVCC will also be offering lifeguard and water safety instructor training. Classes run April 8-12 at the MVCC Utica campus, Perry Junior High in New Hartford, and at the New Hartford Town Park.
Orienteering: Discovery Through Navigation
This “thinking sport” involves map reading and decision-making in addition to a great workout. Students will learn to use a map and compass to navigate through the New Hartford Town Park. Maps and compasses will be provided. Ages 10-15. The camp runs 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the NH Town Park at a cost of $69.
A Taste of Arabic
Join us for a fun and interactive, hands-on learning environment where participants learn to write the Arabic alphabet and make the new sounds through games, songs, and arts and crafts. This class will introduce students to the world of Arabic, as well as the numbers, colors, and simple phrases. No prior knowledge in Arabic necessary. Ages 10-14. The camp runs 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Perry Junior High at a cost of $69.
Here’s a chance to learn the art of magic from illusionist Leon Etienne. This hands-on class will teach you beginning sleight of hand using coins, cards, and other household items. Amaze family and friends with the tricks you will learn! Magic kits are included for all students. Ages 8 and up. The camp runs 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Perry Junior High at a cost of $99.
Tape, Tape, Tape
Ever wanted to make things out of tape? Here is your chance. Learn how to make duct tape wallets, jewelry, and flowers – and even cast your hand with tape. Students will also get a appreciation for artists and art history as they create their own unique projects. All materials included. Ages 10-14. The camps runs 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Perry Junior High at a cost of $99.
Lifeguard Training Course
Get the skills and knowledge you need to become a lifeguard. Learn to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to aquatic emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. Prerequisites: Must be able to swim 500 yards continuously with predetermined strokes before the first class session and at least 15 years of age by the last class session. With successful completion, you will receive certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR for the lifeguard. The course runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, 12:00-9:00 p.m. on the MVCC Utica campus; the cost is $299.
Water Safety Instructor Training
Get the skills and knowledge necessary to become a Water Safety Instructor. Candidates will learn how to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics, and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics, as well as the six basic swimming strokes. Students must be 16 years old and do not need to be a lifeguard prior to taking WSI. This course includes the prerequisite course. The course runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 12:00-9:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on the MVCC Utica campus; the cost is $299.
