Learn a second language at MVCC
Get ready for that trip overseas or a vacation to a cultural event this summer by learning to speak a foreign language during the winter months. Mohawk Valley Community College’s Center for Corporate and Community Education has designed a series of non-credit classes which makes it easy and fun to learn a second language. These programs include:
Conversational German: Learn to speak German with a hands-on, practical approach. This class will cover “survival” scenarios for travel as well as conversation. Perfect for anyone preparing for an upcoming trip to a German-speaking country, looking to refresh their German skills, or someone who simply has an interest in languages. Instructor Jennifer Fuller lived and studied in Germany and will share her cultural experiences. This course will be held each Monday, January 31 – April 11, from 7-8:30 p.m., on the Utica Campus. Registration fee is $69.
Introductory American Sign Language: Learn to communicate using basic American Sign Language techniques. This course presents an overview of deaf culture and will provide basic sign vocabulary, including colors, numbers, letters, family members and animals. Instructor Heather Northey will target the classes to the interests and abilities of participants. This course will be held each Tuesday, March 8 – April 12, from 5:30-7 p.m., at the New York State School for the Deaf in Rome. Registration fee is $49.
Conversational Vietnamese: Learn the basics of the language spoken in one of the new hot Asian destinations. This basic course will cover the tones and diacritics, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar needed for traveling and making new friends. The dialect taught will be that of southern Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City. This course will be held each Monday, March 28 – May 16, from 5-7 p.m., on the Utica Campus. Registration fee is $50.
Irish Language for Beginners: In this course, participants will be introduced to the basics of conversational Irish (Gaelic) language. Lessons will include history and folklore of Ireland to help students to learn the roots of this rich and interesting language. This course will be held each Thursday, February 17 – March 31, from 7-8:30 p.m., on the Utica Campus. Registration fee is $59.
Greek Language for Beginners: Have fun learning conversational Greek by reading, writing, and learning vocabulary and some grammar. Participants will also learn about Modern Greek culture and its rich history. Textbook and workbook are provided. This course will be held each Tuesday, February 1 – March 22, from 6-8 p.m., on the Utica Campus. Registration fee is $89.

Office hours are 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Friday. All MVCC non-credit instruction is completely self-supporting, including indirect costs, and requires no public funding.
