Vroman named Region III Athlete of the Week

Heather Vroman (Utica/Proctor High) has been the driving force behind the Mohawk Valley Community College women's cross country team with top finishes in several races while posting the best time in Region III for the 2008 season.

Vroman was selected as the NJCAA's Region III Athlete of the Week after winning the regional Cross Country Championships this past weekend. She won with a time of 20 minutes, 15 seconds which was over a minute faster than the second place finisher. Vroman led the Hawks to a championship with the team currently being ranked No. 1 in the nation.

In other races this season, Vroman won the SUNY Cobleskill Invitational with a time of 18:55 which is the fastest in Region III. She is a freshman majoring in Liberal Arts. Vroman and her teammates Hannah Hoffman (Rome/Rome Free Academy) and Sara Pick (Westmoreland/Westmoreland High) were also named All-Region III runners.

Men's Cross Country: Kevin Mulcahy (Queensbury/Queensbury High) and Todd Butters (Rome/Rome Free Academy) received All-Region III honors after breaking the 28 minute mark in the regional race. The Hawks placed second with 75 points behind champions SUNY Delhi, which scored 16 points.

Mulcahy has been named MVCC's Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 17. He set a personal best at the Albany Invitational with a time of 27:22. In his sophomore season, he is majoring in Manufacturing Production Technology.

Ice Hockey: The MVCC ice hockey team opened the season with a 6-2 loss to Erie Community College. Leading the Hawks was Kevin McCready (Poughkeepsie/Arlington High) with one goal while goalkeeper Josh Lamie (Utica/Proctor High) made 36 saves.
